Ear Falls Hydro Station

Putting Our Energy to Good Use
Ontario Power Generation makes electricity that is sold through the IESO (Independent Electricity System Operator) to people and businesses in Ontario and sometimes to provinces and states around us. This electricity is important for all of us, because without it, we couldn't turn on a light, make toast or watch television. Businesses wouldn't be able to run machines, computers or air conditioners.

Counting the megawatts
As of December 31, 2004, OPG could produce about 22,790 megawatts (MW) of electricity at any one time. This consisted of:

  • Three nuclear stations that can make 6,103 MW (four units at Darlington, four units at Pickering B and two units at Pickering A)

  • Five fossil-fuelled stations that can make 9,718 MW

  • 35 hydroelectric stations that can make 6,835 MW

  • 32 EcoLogo™-certified green power stations (29 hydroelectric and three wind) that can make 133 MW

  • As of April 2005, Lakeview Station was closed

The Grand Total

In 2004, OPG generated 105 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity. This would light 12 billion 100-watt light bulbs for a year.
