Radioactive materials transportation

Handling with care

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has made thousands of shipments of nuclear materials, adding up to millions of kilometres travelled, and not once has any nuclear material been released into the environment.

OPG is proud of our excellent safety record, and we remain committed to the safe operation of our nuclear stations and our radioactive waste management facilities.

Safety is our top priority

Transporting nuclear materials

For over 40 years, OPG has been safely transporting nuclear materials around the province.

About a third of these shipments are of low or intermediate-level materials sent to the Nuclear Sustainability Services - Western Waste Management Facility in Bruce County.

Contaminated heavy water, used inside the reactor, is transported to Darlington’s Tritium Removal Facility, where it is stored until the tritium decays into helium-3, which is then harvested for use in medical procedures and a host of other applications.

Oversight and transparency

Licensed by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, OPG complies fully with Canadian regulations regarding “Transportation of Dangerous Goods” and the transport of “Nuclear Substances.” Learn more about the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s rules.

Trucks, transportation packages, and programs also adhere to the International Atomic Energy Agency regulations for the “Safe Transport of Radioactive Material.”

We communicate with police, fire, emergency, and municipal officials through face-to-face presentations, and with the public at community group meetings, local municipal councils, and our Information Centres.

In addition to regular inspections and maintenance, OPG has an emergency response plan that’s audited internally and by Transport Canada.
