  Central Ontario is home to 20 of our hydroelectric facilities, some of which, like our Sills Island Generating Station, have been part of their community for more than one hundred years.

Harnessing the power of the sun

Renewable generation from solar technology is a more recent addition to Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG's) clean energy portfolio, and one we continue to assess for future development opportunities.

How does solar power work?

Coal, conversion, and climate

In April 2014, Ontario Power Generation burned its last piece of coal to generate electricity in Ontario. This transition off coal remains one of the world’s single largest actions to fight climate change and is the equivalent of taking seven million cars off the road. This made Ontario the first jurisdiction in North America to fully eliminate coal as a source of electricity generation.

Following the coal closures, we decommissioned our Nanticoke Generating Station and in 2019, we built a new solar generating facility in partnership with Six Nations of Grand River Development Corporation and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

The facility can generate 44 megawatts of clean, renewable power for the province — that’s enough to power a small town.

We partnered with Six Nations Development Corporation and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation to develop our first ever solar power facility.

The solar facility can generate 44 megawatts of clean, renewable power for the province — that’s enough to power a small town.
