Small modular reactors

Small but mighty - SMRs are the future of nuclear

Imagine a technology that could produce clean, low-carbon power, be factory-assembled and delivered anywhere in the world, and provide reliable, affordable energy to homes, district heating to entire communities, or power for heavy industry. That’s the promise of small modular reactors (SMRs), the next-generation of nuclear technology that is set to be deployed by OPG right here in Ontario – the first place to do so in North America.

Ontario is leading North America's clean energy future

On July 7, 2023, the Ontario government announced it is working with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to commence planning and licensing for three additional SMRs, for a total of four, at our Darlington nuclear site.

Global First Power MMR

Global First Power, a joint partnership between OPG and Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation, is building a micro modular reactor capable of generating 15 megawatts (MW) of thermal energy and 5 MW of electricity that can be used to provide industrial projects with heat and energy.

X-energy

We are also working with X-energy to pursue opportunities to deploy the Xe-100 SMR for industrial applications in Canada. These SMRs could help heavy industry reach climate change goals by using clean, safe electricity and high temperature steam efficiently to power production facilities and decarbonize industrial processes.
