Indigenous programs and initiatives

Pride in our partnerships

We are proud of the programs and initiatives we have created to support Indigenous communities across the province. Explore Ontario Power Generation's (OPG's) history of working with Indigenous Nations and communities to help power Ontario.

OPG’s policies

OPG’s Indigenous Relations Policy encourages the inclusion of Indigenous communities and businesses on many of our projects and initiatives.

The policy outlines our objectives for respecting rights and interests and developing and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships and partnerships with Ontario’s Indigenous Nations and communities.

Our focus is on building these relationships and working to ensure they are developed on a foundation of respect for the languages, customs, cultural organizations, and rights of Indigenous Nations and communities in Ontario.

Explore how OPG has committed to building and maintaining progressive relationships with Ontario’s Indigenous communities.

OPG continues to enhance its business relationships with Indigenous communities through its commitment to the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business’s (CCAB) Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) program.

A member of CCAB since 2003, OPG first undertook a Progressive Aboriginal Assessment in 2015 and in 2021, OPG was awarded Gold Designation.

The Indigenous Opportunities Network (ION) was created in 2018 and is now part of OPG’s Reconciliation Action Plan in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Call to Action #92, which calls on corporate Canada to help create a better future for Indigenous workers.

ION works towards creating an engaged and inclusive workforce that reflects the broad diversity of Indigenous communities and people across OPG and the greater energy sector.

ION is a community-centered program that recruits job-ready Indigenous people for various energy sector occupations including skilled trades, project management, and administrative roles. The ION program works with Kagita Mikam, an Indigenous employment and training agency, to recruit and place skilled and qualified members from Indigenous communities across Ontario in jobs within the fast-growing energy industry, including at OPG, union halls, and vendor partner organizations.
